Dirk Van Hulle at Antwerp, who has written on Joyce, Proust, and Mann, gave a wonderful presentation (3 or 4 years ago) on Beckett translating Beckett, in which it seemed that without hearing the echoes of the French original (puns and translation jokes) in the English translation one really couldn’t “get” the translation.
